MEMORY — Five Bass and the Turtles

My daughter started fishing when she was about five years old, and by the time she was around seven, she already thought she had this fishing thing figured out.

One day we were fishing at Fort Yargo. She was catching bass pretty good.

Me? I was catching turtles.

After a while, I told her I was about ready to move because apparently I had found the turtle section of the lake. But she was catching bass and having a good time, so I told her, “As long as you’re happy, we’ll stay right here.”

I figured if I kept the turtles busy on my side, maybe they’d leave her alone and let her keep catching fish. I’m pretty sure I might’ve even caught the same turtle twice.

By the end of the day, she had caught five bass.

I had caught enough turtles to start taking reservations.

But I didn’t mind. She was happy, and that was good enough for me.

That’s one of those fishing days I still remember and enjoy.

And my daughter still brags about it 20 years later.
